DIY Felt Valentine’s Day Garland – Cute & Easy Handmade Decor

I love decorating for the holidays. We all know that Christmas is a fan favorite but theres something about Valentines Day decor that just breaks up the middle of winter. It’s fun and cheerful in an otherwise kind of gloomy time of year. Especially for those that live in the north east! I love an excuse to decorate and I plan on taking full advantage. Plus my son was so excited when he came home from school and I had it all up. He said to me “mommy, I love it!” and well, that was all I needed to hear to make the effort worth it.

Honestly, I don’t decorate for me. I do it because I want to give my kids a home that feels welcoming and cozy with happy memories. For me, I want those memories to include a fun mom that enjoyed decorating for the holidays and making it feel special. Plus, Valentines day is so fun! The first thing I decided to make this year was this DIY Valentines Day felt garland.

First grab your supplies. You don’t need much to make this DIY Valentines Day felt garland. You just need felt, embroidery floss, scissors, some pillow stuffing, and a needle. I actually used an old pillow that I didn’t like anymore for the stuffing! An embroidery needle would work better, but I just used a regular needle that I had at home. It was trickier to thread but I got it to work!

Create your shapes. I just free handed it. I drew an X, an O and a heart. It wasn’t perfect but it doesn’t need to be. Then of course, cut out your shapes. You want to have a even amount because you need a front and a back. I made 8 hearts, 6 X’s and 6 O’s. I knew about the width I wanted to make my garland and that I wanted a heart on either end. You can make more or less. It all depends on how long you want your DIY Valentines day felt garland to be. I also decided to use the red color to sew up the pink hearts and the pink thread to sew up the red letters. But of course you can change this to whatever you prefer.

Sew them almost all the way up but leave a small space to put in the stuffing. When sewing up the O’s it was easiest to sew the center first, then the outside and leave a small space on the outside to stuff it around. For the X’s it was easiest to leave a hole in one of the cross sections. For the hearts it didn’t really matter where I left the small hole I didn’t have any issues filling those ones up. After you add the stuffing, sew the rest up!

Last step is putting them on the string. Originally I purchased twine for this step but I quickly realized that it was very difficult to get through. I didn’t want to glue it because I knew this garland would be visible from both sides. If you plan on hanging it on a wall, shelf, or mirror you can absolutely just use some hot glue and glue it onto some twine. I ended up using the embroidery floss. I just fed the needle through the pieces and strung it on. The benefit of this is that I was able to move them around after I had it up verse if I used glue I wouldn’t be able to move the pieces.

Thats it! This is such a super easy and affordable DIY. You can use this to make so many different things, and I plan on it in the future. It was actually very relaxing to make. I realized as I was doing it that I may have found a new hobby. What do you think? Would you make this DIY Valentines day felt garland?
